Background

Salomon was founded in 1947 in Annecy, French Alps, manufacturing ski edge metal and bindings. Acquired by Amer Sports in 2005. In 2018, the same Chinese-led consortium that controls Arc'teryx acquired Amer Sports for approximately $5.9 billion. Salomon is a Premium Partner for the 2026 Milan–Cortina Winter Olympics.

Parent Entity & Ownership

Salomon's ownership is identical to Arc'teryx: Amer Sports majority-controlled by Anta Sports (44.5%), FountainVest (12.7%), and Tencent (4.5%) — approximately 61.7% combined Chinese consortium. Salomon's Annecy headquarters are preserved, but strategic ownership and profit flow to the Anta-led Chinese consortium.

Controversies

Chinese ownership of a 2026 Winter Olympics partner. Salomon's Premium Partnership for the 2026 Milan–Cortina Olympics means a Chinese-owned brand under French brand identity will have prominent placement at one of the world's most visible sporting events in an EU member state.

Anta structural conflict of interest. Anta operates competing sportswear brands (its own Anta line, FILA licensed in China, Descente) alongside Salomon. Anta has a structural incentive to direct premium outdoor growth toward its Chinese-facing brands while managing Salomon as a separate heritage property — a tension that can shape product, distribution, and marketing decisions in ways that do not reflect Salomon's independent commercial interests.

French heritage under Chinese control. Salomon's connection to French ski culture and the Alpine sporting community is deep. Its Chinese-led ownership is not widely known among French consumers, ski instructors, or the European outdoor community — a gap that is commercially advantageous to Anta to maintain.

Verdict — Chinese-owned

Salomon is Chinese-owned. Amer Sports is majority-controlled by a Chinese consortium holding approximately 61.7%. Salomon's French Alpine heritage and Annecy headquarters are genuine, but ownership and strategic control sit with a Chinese-led holding structure. Its 2026 Olympic partnership brings that ownership significant brand visibility in Europe.
